Harrington Historic Preservation Commission (HHPC)
On Nov. 12, 2009, The Harrington City Council approved an ordinance to establish a Harrington Certified Local Government and a 7 member Harrington Historic Preservation Commission as an advisory board.
The purpose of the Commission is to provide for the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic resources; raise community awareness; and serve as the city’s primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation.
Initial tasks undertaken by the Commission included crafting by-laws, completing the application for the City of Harrington to become a Certified Local Government, and applying for a grant to begin official inventory of historic properties in the downtown core. Official notifications of Certified Local Government status and grant award are pending.
In addition to being a resource for local owners of historic properties, the Commission plans to explore the possibility of establishing a portion of downtown Harrington as an Historic District. The theory is that preserving the historic look to a core area, yet to be determined, would help attract new business owners and residents. Combined with a marketing effort extolling the virtues of our safe streets, clean air, clean water, and small town atmosphere;the town of Harrington would remain sustainable and even begin to thrive with new economic development.

PREPARING HISTORIC PROPERTY INVENTORY FORMS
Inventory forms for historic properties must be submitted to DAHP in an electronic format (see
Database User Manual, Chapter 8 “Exporting Files”) using the Historic Property Inventory
Database (a Microsoft Access application). Submittal in this format is the expected practice unless
prior approval has been obtained from DAHP for the use of an alternate inventory form. The
database is available to download free of charge from the DAHP website at www.dahp.wa.gov or
by contacting the Survey and Inventory Program Manager, Megan Duvall, at
