Harrington Historic Preservation Resources

Harrington Historic Preservation Commission (HHPC)
On Nov. 12, 2009, The Harrington City Council approved an ordinance to establish a Harrington Certified Local Government and a 7 member Harrington Historic Preservation Commission as an advisory board.

The purpose of the Commission is to provide for the identification, evaluation, and protection of historic resources; raise community awareness; and serve as the city’s primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation.

Initial tasks to be undertaken by the Commission include crafting by-laws and completing the application for the City of Harrington to become a Certified Local Government. Once approved, the Commission will be eligible to apply for grants to help fund its educational and administrative duties.

In addition to being a resource for local owners of historic properties, the Commission plans to explore the possibility of establishing a portion of downtown Harrington as an Historic District. The theory is that preserving the historic look to a core area, yet to be determined, would help attract new business owners and residents. Combined with a marketing effort extolling the virtues of our safe streets, clean air, clean water, and small town atmosphere;the town of Harrington would remain sustainable and even begin to thrive with new economic development.

ACHP Meeting May be in Harrington in Fall of 2010!
Feb. 15th note: According to the ACHP Agenda on the DAHP web page the ACHP fall meeting will be
                      Harrington/Odessa/Ritzville - October 21-22, 2010

Nov. 20, 2009

. . .The ACHP (Advisory Council on Historic Preservation) would love to come to Harrington for our fall meeting (we haven't firmed down the exact date yet). The date would be in late October or early Nov.  In May the ACHP decided to meet down in Walla Walla to coincide with a barn conference.

The main reason I was looking at Harrington is in fact to support your CLG efforts.  Megan tells me there are not to many (if any) places to stay in town, so the group might stay in Ritzville.. but we would actually love to have the meeting in town (maybe even at the Opera House), and the day before have some type of historic tour.  Unfortunately I have never been to Harrington.. but have seen some great images of your project and other buildings in town.  Hard to say how many people might be attending the meeting this early.  It usually depends on what nominations are being reviewed.  The ACHP and staff includes about 12 people.

So at this point.. if you can tentatively schedule us in... that would be great.  More details to come.
